Statement

My Paintings: and How They Work

My paintings are the abstract result from developments of personal observations that strike me in nature, and in its light, as “moments”.

Nature is my underlying source of inspiration. I may be struck by a small field, the light on a rippling stream, some rocks, a canyon, a loch, or hills. These images often stay with me—sometimes for years—until I release
 them into a painting.

These moments of inspiration are rare and unpredictable. They can occur whilst travelling, in daily life, and especially in the unexpected.

Usually, it is the interplay of light and shadow that attracts me into a calm, still moment- a focus on a specific place in time, caught in the stillness
 of light.

Yet the transformation from real, experienced “moments” into another visual agent is neither a literal nor emotional reprint.

My geometric and colour-block language doesn’t relate directly to nature, or natural forms. It sidesteps these forms becoming a structure.

Either micro or macro, the structure is intuitive and invoked rather than verbatim copy. Thus, the paintings are detached from their source—not (replacements) ersatz representations of experience.

The works are instinctive combinations of their source, creating new
spatial compositions and remake the original “moment” in a new form.

They are like illuminated mica: thin slivers of coloured crystal, sliding
over one another. Within them lies the mathematics of nature, interwoven with human geometry—angular and crystalline, like coloured fragments
in a turning kaleidoscope, full of possibility.

Each painting, with its defined edges, acts as a window. Within it, a geometric construction unfolds—eliminating any direct narrative into a new retinal experience, where colour is the defining element.

The chromatic shifts and interactions provide grounding while also maintaining an enigmatic resistance to literal interpretation.

Beyond perception through geometry and colour, I also aim to infuse
the work with a sense of positivity. In doing so, I set myself two guiding directives.

One is to find solutions that create balance and stability within the composition. The other is to ensure that, within this balance, there remains the possibility of instability—a subtle tension, as if the painting might tip
or shift. Both elements must coexist in the construction.

Just as this duality shapes the structure, the colours engage in mutual relationships. Sometimes one dominates. Often, two colours press
against each other, sympathetic in tone and range. Others deliberately juxtapose in their spectrum, contrast and tone.

This is a delicate balancing act: with these elements fusing into a new, constructed whole.

For me, it is a redux – a transformation of the first original spark into
a unique, autonomous chromatic and spacial schema. Where the
“moment” is transmogrified into an abstract expansion.
